Why Adults Should Swim

Learning to swim as an adult can seem daunting, but realistically it is one of the most rewarding life skills that you can give yourself. There is never an age limit on when you can start something new, and swimming might just be the next big thing you add to your list of lifetime accomplishments. Here are 3 reasons why adults should learn how to swim.

  1. A Life Saving Skill

According to the Red Cross, About one in five Americans cannot swim. Getting acclimated to the water and learning the fundamentals of swimming can save your life! You will feel more comfortable to be in and around a swimming pool if you know the basic fundamentals of swimming. It is also important to know how to swim so that you are safe in any water situations such as spending a lovely day at the beach! Sea-side or open water swimming can potentially lead to danger without proper training even in the most light-hearted environments, so understanding the basics of life saving swim techniques such as floating, safety strokes, and in-water body orientation can save your life and if not, another person’s life as well!

  1. Great Exercise

Swimming is considered one of the best exercises that you can do! Swimming is easy on your joints and bones with low impact that will not cause stress on your body like other forms of exercise does such as running or weightlifting. Swimming is a full body workout where you can work on all types of different muscle groups through in-water resistance as well build better endurance, and breath control. Swimming can also help you develop better hand eye coordination through equal use of both sides of your body and has the added benefit of toning your body while working cardio into your workout routine with ease!

  1. Spend Time With Your Children

There is nothing better than spending time bonding with your children. Being able to support your child in the water will be a huge confidence boost for them in their own swim journey. When you go on vacation with your children to a resort with a beach and pool, they probably want nothing more than to play in the water with their parents. You can also be that positive role model for them in overcoming any fear of the water once they see you in the pool! These are timeless moments that you do not want to miss out on and that you might want to be more confident in yourself!

At Calphin, we offer Adult classes and have seen many beginning adult swimmers build up their confidence and be able to swim across our pool as well as float in water where they cannot stand. We offer one-hour classes to really focus and give the swimmers more time to develop their skills.
