28 Jul The History And Importance of Calphin Clinics
Calphin started hosting clinics in 2018 to cater to the growing customer demand of singular stroke intensives. The Clinic Series provided customers with the opportunity to improve swimmer’s capabilities in a variety of different strokes and techniques in a single-stroke focused environment outside of Calphin’s Traditional Curriculum. Through participation in our Clinic Series Classes, we have seen students improve tremendously in some of their trickiest problem areas.
Calphin created Clinics as an add-on to our traditional curriculum as we acknowledge that one-size does not fit all. Clinics provide an extra layer of customized attention for swimmers who may struggle in one particular area or want more attention to one particular skill as Summer Competitions or Try-outs for local teams approach. Most notably, we host Butterfly clinics in order to ensure that swimmers are properly getting their arms out of the water, that their kick is correct and that their timing is on par. Butterfly can be one of the most difficult strokes for our students to perfect. To correct their stroke, there must be many hours of training and a lot of upper body strength to fully understand it. This clinic is extremely useful and has helped students who have struggled with passing butterfly stroke on their previous tests to mastering the stroke. The coaches who teach the clinic have swam butterfly competitively and break down the stroke in a number of ways with visual interpretations and hands on corrections for students to understand.
Another highlighted clinic that has been a hit is our flip turn and dive clinics. Flip turns and dives can be tricky to fully understand in a one-hour class, especially when students are mostly focusing on their stroke technique and timing. That is why we thought it would be appropriate to develop a clinic that was solely based on flip turns and dives. This clinic is offered to younger class groups such as Glider 3’s, Sprinters and Racers who are not taught these techniques in their respective classes. We also allow our Challenger and Master swimmers to join as this is crucial to their success in the pool. Students really do enjoy learning flip turns and dives as it definitely helps them stand out more not only here at Calphin, but also on swim teams in the area. Again, coaches will break down each step towards flip turns and dives in several ways for students to really grasp an understanding of how to do it correctly.
The joy on swimmer’s faces once they master a flip turn, dive or their butterfly stroke is timeless. These clinics have helped boost swimmer’s self-esteem and have helped them fall in love with the sport! Make sure to keep your eye out for upcoming dates of clinics.
